Personal growth, practice by practice
This domain spent a decade as a directory of self-help sites. What stands here now is the guide the directory never had: what each practice on its shelves actually is.
Walk into the personal-growth world and you meet a bazaar: meditation next to crystal healing next to astrology next to hypnosis, all sold in the same tone of voice. The practices are not alike. Some carry solid evidence, some carry none, and most carry a mix of real experience and inflated claim that takes a little reading to pull apart.
This site is that reading, one practice per page, each held to the same two questions: what does the practice actually involve, and what does the evidence say? Where a practice works, we say how; where the honest answer is “it relaxes people and the rest is unsupported,” we say that instead — and relaxing people is not nothing.
The shelves
- Alternative health — the umbrella: what “alternative” means, and the one question that sorts the shelf.
- Aromatherapy — essential oils, what scent genuinely does, and where the claims outrun it.
- Astrology — the birth-chart tradition as self-reflection rather than prediction.
- Candles and crystals — ritual objects, the placebo question, and buying without being fleeced.
- New age — where the movement came from and what holds it together.
- Courses and training — certificates, teacher trainings, and how to vet one before paying.
- Mediums and healers — the practitioner economy, and the consumer rules that matter most where grief is involved.
The old directory organised the same territory as links to other people's sites; the address of each shelf has been kept, so the old paths still lead somewhere useful.
